Making an Entrance – A grand new approach is underway

The restoration and conversion of Royal Haslar’s important heritage buildings has been, to date, largely behind the scenes. Passers by on the Haslar Road would be forgiven for driving past the high red brick wall that stretches along the site, unaware of what lies beyond. That is about to change!

From February, works will commence to transform the entrance to the former naval hospital, marked for decades by an uninspiring municipal lodge, into one both elegant and welcoming, befitting this important historic site and its new status as a residential multi-generational community.

Once complete this summer, this will open up the commercial/retail buildings, helping to pave the way for delivery of the pub/restaurant, health centre, and other retail buildings.  Discussions are currently ongoing with a number of potential occupiers/businesses.

Specially commissioned CGIs, shown here, illustrate how unlisted parts of the brick wall would be removed, opening up the vista to showcase a mini piazza with seating area and some of the site’s important heritage, and previously obscured, buildings, including the Grade II Listed 1880s water tower, an important local landmark.

With the extraordinary changes that have already taken place within the 62-acre site, the proposals mark an important new stage at Royal Haslar, creating a new public face for this unique residential community as well as better connectivity to Haslar Road and beyond.
